ABOUT THE TRIP

Enjoy a month-long cultural immersion experience  in Costa Rica! This trip offers 2 weeks of instruction in San José and 2 weeks of excursions in Limón. San José offers beautiful beaches, parks, and waterfalls as well as a series of academic and cultural events. In Limón, you will have the opportunity to visit beaches, witness sea turtles laying eggs on the beach, zip line over the forest, and learn about the banana plantations. 

DETAILS

Dates: July 1st- July 31st, 2017

Structure: 2 weeks in San José for classes, 2 weeks in Limón for excursions (potentially 1 week in Panama)

​

Application: The application is due on October 31st, 2016 along with the first down payment of $500 (money order)

PRICES

The total cost of the trip is $3,500. Please note that students will be fully reimbursed if the university cancels. Otherwise, payments are non-refundable after the down payment. Students can also follow the payment plan listed below:

Myra Adu-Sarkodie had the opportunity to spend July 2014 immersed in Costa Rican culture. Upon reflection of her time there, Myra notes that, "Class was easy and events are fun. You will definitely notice that your Spanish improves IMMENSELY. I had a nice host family, but be sure to respect the culture. The people are friendly and you'll notice that they experience some of the same race issues as we do here in America." She highly recommends this trip to anyone who is interested. ABOUT THE TRIP

Spend a month in Colombia! During this trip, students will attend Spanish language and Afro-Colombian culture classes at la Universidad de Cali. Upon completion of the trip, students can earn a total of 6 credit. Participants will also have the opportunity to go on excursions and field trips, including a stay in San Basilio de Palenque, which is the first free maroon society in Colombia. Students will also visit Chocó, the location with the largest population of African descent in Colombia.

Dates: May 15, 2017- June 15, 2017

Application: The application is due at 5pm on Friday, February 3, 2017 with a $100 application fee. The application materials can be downloaded by clicking the "DocX" buttons below.

Eligibility: Each candidate must exemplify high academic achievement and a desire to enhance his or her proficiency in the target language and/or his or her understanding of the country's cultures. The candidate must have at least 6 credits of college-level Spanish or High School AP Spanish credits.

The students should make payments by certified checks to the order of: Universidad del Cauca. ABOUT THE TRIP

The Department of World Languages and cultures, in partnership with EF College Study Tours, is organizing “Havana: Education, Daily Life & Afro-Cuban Cultures”, an educational and cultural program trip to Cuba, from June 20 to June 27, 2017. 

 

From community centers to art studios, from La Habana to Matanzas, you will explore Havana’s culture, Matanzas’ Afro-Cuban Cultures, take a Spanish lesson/a dance lesson, discuss education policy, and even visit an organic farm. Each experience will give you a firsthand understanding of Habaneros’ and Afro-Cubans’ daily lives.

 

The program is open to ALL Howard University’s Students

 

Prerequisite: Two Semesters of Spanish, including classes taken before College (will earn up to 3 credits)
